38th Provo Summer Festival Jul 29 to Aug 1 Jul 16

38th ANNUAL PROVO SUMMER FESTIVAL SET FOR JULY 29TH TO AUGUST 1ST

PROVIDENCIALES, TURKS AND CAICOS (July 16, 2009)—The culture of the Turks and Caicos will be alive and on display this summer, as the country hosts its 38th annual Provo Summer Festival (PSF) from July 29th to August 1.

Hailed as one of the oldest festivals in the Turks and Caicos, and put on annually by the Provo Summer Festival Committee, this year’s festival promises to be another fantastic showcase of culture and talent.

“This year we have organized an impressive schedule of activities highlighting the talent and culture of our island,” said Claudine Ewing, Director of the Provo Summer Festival Committee.  “Our line-up of local and international artists are a fitting blend with the local traditions and customs known to the island.”

“We are delighted that the Provo Summer Festival Committee has stepped forward to host this important Summer Festival, ensuring that 30 years of tradition associated with this event is not lost, and we are confident that the Provo Summer Festival will be a fun time for all,” commented Ralph Higgs, Director of Tourism, Marketing for the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board.

This year’s Provo Summer Festival will replace the Annual Turks and Caicos Music and Cultural Festival, which is usually scheduled for the same weekend but has been deferred.

“While the Turks and Caicos Music and Cultural Festival (TCMCF) has grown over the past 5 years to be one of the most popular and recognized events within the region, the current economic downturn has forced us to postpone this year’s festival,” explained Honorable Wayne Garland, Minister of Tourism for the Turks and Caicos.  “With that said we give the Provo Summer Festival our full support and encourage residents and those traveling to the islands for the annual Music and Cultural Festival to come and enjoy the Provo Summer Festival just the same.”

Dog and Pony Show in Provo Jul 13

I have a new appreciation for the expression “dog and pony show” after experiencing both in one day recently!   A few Saturday’s ago, we had the island’s first Gymkhana at Provo Ponies.  Eight young children between got to strut their stuff and their ponies amongst a crowd of 50 or more.  We all enjoyed a morning of equestrian sportsmanship and lots of ribbon presentations!  From equitation to jumping to the most stubborn pony, there was a prize for everyone, ensuring no one left the stable without a smile.   Provo Ponies did an outstanding job - not only on this event - but over the last 12 weeks of preparation and practice.  My daughter has loved spending her Saturday mornings there with the ponies, chickens, dogs, cats and other various lovable creatures that hang out there.

After the Pony show, we moved swiftly to Turtle Cove to catch the TCSPCA’s Annual Dog Show - an event anticipated by pet-lovers of all ages.  As in previous years, there were prizes for the best dog trick, best-looking potcake and dog that looks most like its owner as well as the obstacle course.  I particularly enjoyed the half-time entertainment when an artist speed-painted to music.  It was fascinating to watch him jump back and forth between the two canvasses as the song switched from “Who let the dogs out” to “Josie and the Pussycats.”  What was even more amazing was watching his work literally appear before our eyes upside down!  The paintings were later given out as prizes to two lucky pet owners.

Needless to say, by 3 pm we were all exhausted but very impressed by the beautiful, well-behaved animals we shared our day with!  We can only imagine how they must have felt.   This just goes to show there is a lot more than just, sun, sea and sand when it comes to Turks and Caicos!
